We are Brighter Futures Africa — formerly Tumaini Hope for Children. For over 25 years, we have been dedicated to transforming lives across Africa.

Our Story

From Tumaini to Brighter Futures

Founded over 25 years ago as Tumaini Hope for Children, we began with a simple yet powerful belief: every child, no matter their circumstances, deserves the chance to thrive. Today, as Brighter Futures Africa, that belief remains at the heart of everything we do.

We seek out the most vulnerable — children facing abuse, FGM, child marriage, and unimaginable hardship — and we help them reclaim their dignity, their hope, and their future. Through deep local roots and trusted partnerships, we reach those who might otherwise be unseen.

Over the years, we have supported more than 2,000 children, building not just individual lives but whole communities capable of sustaining their own futures.

We applaud the work of every individual and organisation striving to relieve suffering, reduce poverty and create a better future for those in need. There is a place for many different approaches to charitable giving, and every genuine effort to make a difference matters.

At Brighter Futures Foundation (Africa), however, we believe there is something particularly important about knowing the people you help, understanding their circumstances and being able to see how your generosity is changing lives.

We are not a distant funding organisation. We are personally involved in the work we support.

Working alongside our local delivery partners in Kenya, we maintain a close understanding of the children, families and communities receiving our support. We receive individual reports on the people we help, enabling us to understand their circumstances, monitor their progress and see how our support is making a difference.

We also maintain detailed financial oversight of the funds entrusted to us. We want to know not simply how much money has been spent, but where it has gone, what it has provided and whether it represents good value. Every donation carries a responsibility, and we take that responsibility seriously.

We have also chosen to keep our UK operation exceptionally lean. We have no salaried employees, and our UK team gives its time entirely voluntarily. We have no expensive offices or buildings to maintain and keep administrative expenditure to a minimum.

This means we can concentrate our resources on the work that matters: supporting children, strengthening families and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

For us, charitable giving is about more than transferring money. It is about personal involvement, responsible stewardship and making a tangible difference in individual lives.

A mother of three and soon-to-be grandmother, she has dedicated much of her life to supporting children, young people, and families. She is currently completing a degree apprenticeship in Occupational Therapy, building on a psychology degree and extensive experience in children’s social care, including work as a foster carer and short breaks provider for children with complex needs and disabilities.

Jonathan Maxwell

Health Advisor

Jonathan is a husband and father of 4 children with a desire to help where help is needed. He has been a GP Partner and Trainer in Daventry for about 20 years. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor at Warwick Medical School.
